01 / OVERVIEW

About this material

Copper is used on the anode because it is stable against lithium at low potential and does not alloy with it at cell operating voltages — aluminium, the cathode choice, would dissolve into the electrolyte below about 1 V. Foil thickness has fallen steadily as cell design pushes energy density: 12 μm was standard, 8 μm is common, and 6 μm is used where coating and handling equipment can support it.

Surface topography matters as much as thickness. A controlled roughness profile gives the water-based anode slurry something to key into, which reduces delamination during cycling. For silicon-containing anodes the recommendation is usually a carbon-coated foil instead, because the large volume change of silicon puts far more mechanical stress on the interface.

04 / QUALITY & HANDLING

Documentation, controls and care

Quality controls

  • Thickness measured across the web
  • Areal density tolerance verified
  • Pinhole inspection
  • Surface roughness reported per lot

Handling & storage

  • Handle with gloves — fingerprints cause localised corrosion.
  • Store in a dry place; copper tarnishes in humid air.
  • Avoid sharp creases; creased foil causes coating defects and coating skips.

Grades on this page are references used to describe capability; they are not a fixed product list.
Specification values are typical windows compiled from public technical references and supplier
datasheets, and are provided for selection guidance only. The specification delivered against your
order is agreed in writing, and measured values are confirmed on the batch certificate of analysis.
Materials listed here may be hazardous; they must be handled by qualified personnel under applicable
regulations.
