01 / OVERVIEW

About this material

NMP is the solvent almost every cathode slurry is built on. It dissolves PVDF completely at 40–60 °C, has a high boiling point that keeps the slurry stable through mixing and holding, and wets active material and carbon black surfaces well enough to produce a uniform coating. It is also strongly hygroscopic, which is the property that matters most when specifying a battery grade.

Absorbed water travels with the slurry into the dried electrode, and from there into the cell. For that reason battery-grade NMP is specified on water content and non-volatile residue rather than on purity alone — a nominal 99.9% material with 3000 ppm water is not usable. This grade is controlled to ≤500 ppm water and ≤10 ppm NVR, packed under dry conditions.

04 / QUALITY & HANDLING

Documentation, controls and care

Quality controls

  • Water by Karl Fischer on every lot
  • GC purity and NVR reported
  • Packed under nitrogen blanket
  • Retained samples held for 12 months

Handling & storage

  • Hygroscopic — reseal immediately after dispensing and blanket with dry gas.
  • Use in a ventilated area; NMP is a reproductive toxicant and requires appropriate controls.
  • Store away from oxidisers and ignition sources below 30 °C.

Specification values are typical windows compiled from public technical references and supplier
datasheets, and are provided for selection guidance only. The specification delivered against your
order is agreed in writing, and measured values are confirmed on the batch certificate of analysis.
