01 / OVERVIEW

About this material

This is the workhorse formulation for lithium-ion research: 1.0 M lithium hexafluorophosphate dissolved in an equal-volume blend of ethylene carbonate, dimethyl carbonate and ethyl methyl carbonate. EC provides the high dielectric constant needed to dissociate the salt and forms the SEI on graphite; DMC and EMC lower viscosity and extend the useful temperature range.

Water and free acid are the two variables that most often ruin otherwise sound experiments. LiPF6 hydrolyses in the presence of moisture to produce HF, which attacks cathode materials and destroys the anode interphase. Each lot is therefore controlled to ≤20 ppm water and ≤50 ppm HF, with both values reported on the certificate of analysis.

04 / QUALITY & HANDLING

Documentation, controls and care

Quality controls

  • Water and free acid tested on every lot
  • Conductivity verified at 25 °C
  • Filled and sealed under argon
  • Retained samples held for 12 months

Handling & storage

  • Open only inside a glove box with water and oxygen below 0.1 ppm.
  • Store at 0–10 °C; allow sealed bottles to equilibrate before opening.
  • Electrolyte attacks skin and eyes — wear appropriate PPE and handle under ventilation.

Grades on this page are references used to describe capability; they are not a fixed product list.
Specification values are typical windows compiled from public technical references and supplier
datasheets, and are provided for selection guidance only. The specification delivered against your
order is agreed in writing, and measured values are confirmed on the batch certificate of analysis.
Materials listed here may be hazardous; they must be handled by qualified personnel under applicable
regulations.
